Waste Disposal
It is an offence for any vessel, regardless of size, including recreational craft, to dump any garbage or refuse overboard within a certain distance of land, and in the case of plastics and other persistent rubbish, in any sea area surrounding the United Kingdom.
In addition to the facilities that the harbour authority provides it is also bound by law to review these facilities and ensure that they are adequate for the purposes intended. A review is made every two years and the findings reported to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), in the form of a Port Waste Management Plan.
There are facilities for domestic dry waste to be found at:
- Mainstream pontoon – above the fuel barge including recycling facilities
- Visitors’ Pontoon – adjacent to Coronation park
- Facilities for mixed glass recycling can be found on the waste pontoons
- Disposal point for dead batteries By arrangement with Dart Harbour. Do not leave batteries on pontoons.
- Hazardous/toxic waste can be dealt with by arrangement with Dart Harbour. Please note a charge will be levied.
Waste Facilities - Dartmouth
Waste disposal and recycling facilities in the port have been upgraded in 2009. These facilities are available for use by all vessels that have paid harbour dues.
Waste and recycling facilities are located on a new waste pontoon moored in the mid-stream north of the Res Nova Restaurant and the fuel barge. This position is mid way between the visitor pontoon on the Dartmouth side and the deep water visitor pontoons below the Higher Ferry on the Kingswear side of the river.
Please note that there are no longer facilities to dispose of waste on the Town Jetty.
All boat owners are therefore requested to recycle their waste using this pontoon which is readily accessible in mid stream.
