Dart Harbour Moorings

The River Dart in South Devon is one of the finest and safest natural Harbours in the British Isles and has approximately 2,800 moorings. Although provision of moorings is not one of the original functions of Dart Harbour, it now accounts for around 70% of its turnover. To help guide its moorings’ decisions, and after extensive consultation, Dart Harbour has created a Moorings’ Policy.

The policy seeks to balance the substantial demand for moorings (which has led to the development of long slow moving waiting lists) with the requirements of navigation, optimisation of the use of the harbour and conservation and environmental enhancement of the Dart.

The Authority is committed to having open and fair policies to try to ensure that the unique character of the Dart is maintained not just for current users but for generations to come. The effect of these policies is that only a very limited increase in the number of moorings will occur in the next decade and any increases will be in strictly defined areas.

Dart Harbour has approximately 1,400 permanent moorings and 200 visitors’ moorings and has a limited number of swinging, trot moorings and pontoon berths available for long-term hire. There are also some running moorings and mud berth moorings available.

Virtually all of the river Dart fundus (the riverbed), apart from a few exceptions, is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.
