Celebrating and Conserving our Dart Harbour and Estuary

Project - to encourage primary schools in the Dart Estuary catchment to investigate a current estuary conservation issue, and explore a way of engaging the wider community through raising awareness about it.

The aim of the project is to encourage the wider Dart community to engage with pro-active responsibility for the care of its Dart estuary, an area of it or a particular wildlife habitat, community or species.

Guidance for Primary School Groups

The Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority would like to invite local groups or classes of primary school children to investigate, design and create a way of raising awareness about the problems of litter or waste in the estuary within their local community.

Groups should investigate the types of waste that enter the estuary and maybe choose one aspect or type of problem that they can relate to or care about.

The judging panel are hoping that each group will investigate an aspect of litter or waste that they are interested in, which the community are responsible for in some way and find out more about it – where does it comes from?; is anything done to stop or treat it?; why does it end up in the estuary?; what damage does it do in the estuary?; can it be stopped and how can people around the estuary help?

We would then like the group to think about a novel, clever, different or direct but very effective way of getting a message across to the wider community or possibly a target group within that community. We would expect that the message would include an awareness raising about the particular chosen issue, why the children have chosen this issue and in particular, how the audience of the message might help with the issue.

Output – we will ask that the ‘message’ will be made available for public display at Dartmouth and Totnes, or if this is not possible, a recording of the ‘message’ performance. We will also expect some form of project report or diary that highlights some of the decisions and discussions held within the group, and some of the investigations, ideas and trials as the project evolved.

The project presented by the children will be marked on:

  • Quality of investigation around the issue,
  • Quality of presentation and content of the project report / diary,
  • Quality of the message material produced,
  • Perceived effectiveness of the message and media used.

Whatever media format the children choose, we will do our level best to exhibit and advertise the message material within the local community through the appropriate medium; obviously, there can be no guarantee that we can attract the cooperation of third party media editors and producers.
