Competition Guidance for Young People aged 16 -21 years

Is the River Dart an important part of your life?

The Dart Harbour Authority is running a competition for young people aged 16-21 years, who are
motivated by the river Dart. You may be a watersports club leader, or you may work on the river, or the river may have motivated you to follow a particular field of study.

Closing Date for applications: 30th June 2010

Is the River Dart an important part of your life?

SAILING - WRITING - ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT - ART - WORK

It doesn’t matter what the activity is, the important criteria is that the project you submit would inspire and encourage others to take part in activities on the river Dart.

About you

You find living, studying or working on the Dart exciting and inspirational. You enjoy encouraging others to share your love of the River Dart. You believe it is very important to look after the river and to insure that in the future, others will enjoy the same facilities. You are a high achiever in your particular field and you like telling people about your work.

The first prize in this competition is a scholarship of £500. This can be spent on any activity related to your project. So for instance, if you are a top class sailor, it could be used to allow you to travel to a competition. If you are a keen photographer, it could buy you a new camera. If you are a boat builder, it may buy you materials for your project. The choice is yours!!

How to enter:

You ask an adult who knows what you have contributed to your club or the level that you have
achieved in your project, to nominate you on the online entry form. (This adult should not be anyone to whom you are related.)

You decide what it is that the river has prompted you do. You then write a short description of the activity or project and why it’s important to you on the online entry form.

You then send the entry form to Dart Harbour by June 30th 2010.
A panel of experts will then choose the best 3 entries and if you are selected, you will be invited to attend a final to talk about your activity or project and to show any written or visual work.

Prizes

  • The winner will receive an award of £500 scholarship to be spent on a Dart Harbour approved project.
  • In addition, the winner will receive a 3 day programme of work experience with Dart Harbour.
  • All finalists will receive a certificate.
  • The prizes will be presented at an Awards ceremony in November 2010.

Rules and eligibility

  • This competition is open to anyone who is 16 or over and under 21 on the 30th June 2010.
  • You must live work or go to school or college, or attend a sailing, rowing, canoeing club or other club, within 10 miles of the tidal river Dart. (The area from the river mouth to the bridge at Totnes.)
  • The project must be your own work.
  • The Judges’ decision is final.

Advice to Proposers

In making this award, Dart Harbour is hoping to identify an outstanding individual who can
demonstrate excellence in a field of study associated with the River Dart.
It is expected that the young person would be highly self- motivated by their interest and will
have achieved a recognised level of excellence in their chosen area of marine activity.
The Dart Harbour want to ensure that the options for the project remain as broad as possible,
allowing the young person to design and carry out a project which has been inspired by their
personal interest in the river. It is expected that there will be a range of subject areas
including, environmental, personal sailing ability, coaching water activities, boat building,
creative writing, photography, community projects etc. Whatever field is selected, the
guiding criteria for nomination, will be that the young person has made an unique and
individual outstanding contribution based on their interest in the River Dart.
It is also expected that the young person may already be involved in the project prior
entering for the award. For example, he/she may already have produced a project for
coursework, or be involved in a local rowing club, or a community project or working in a
marine environment, which meets the criteria. This award would allow for recognition for
achieving excellence in their chosen field provided that the project is based on the River Dart.

In your role as employer/ lecturer/ club coach/ youth worker, you come in contact with many
young people who are already highly motivated by their interest in the River Dart. We would
be very grateful if you could make them aware of the competition and support them in
entering. There may be others who find the incentive of the competition a good reason for
producing a project on the Dart and we hope you will encourage them. The prize for the 16-
21 age group is an individual scholarship of £500 and a 3 day placement with Dart Harbour
Authority. Runners up will receive certificates.

We have kept the entry form as simple as possible so that it is not too time consuming for all
involved. We are also keen that young people who may not have the best academic skills are
not excluded from entering. So for instance, we may attract entries from those with excellent
boat building skills or a high level of sailing ability, but who are less able at expressing
themselves on paper. All entries have to display the young person’s enthusiasm for their
project and, if selected as a finalist, they would have to be able to talk knowledgably about
their area of expertise.

We hope, that together, we will find our Young Champion and help raise an appreciation
among young people, of the outstanding area in which we live.
