James was appointed to the Board in January 2017.
His formative years were spent in Dartmouth, where he learned to sail as a youngster on the River. A Weapon Engineer in the Royal Navy for some 30 years, he enjoyed an appointment to the staff of BRNC in the mid-eighties and in subsequent years developed his skills as a manager and a strategist. Throughout his career, he maintained a home in and around Dartmouth. Following his retirement from the navy he ran a small business in the town and served as a Town Councillor for 3 years.
Building on his skills on the water, he became a professional Yachtmaster Instructor working for, the locally based, Devon Sailing and then Nonstop Sailing companies. With a Yachtmaster Ocean ticket, he was employed on long haul voyages crossing the Atlantic, and operated in both the UK and the Caribbean.
Since his return from the sea, James has been Moorings Officer at the RDYC, Boatswain at the Dittisham Sailing Club, and Chairman of the Joint Regatta Sailing Committee. He is now the Commodore at the Dittisham Sailing Club, where he can often be found racing his Phantom dinghy, usually to the amusement of others!
With ‘the river in his blood” James is delighted to be part of a team that wants to maintain the beauty of this river.
