Capt Geoff Holland now In Post as CEO/Harbour Master

Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority are pleased to announce that Capt Geoff Holland has now taken the reins of the Authority from the Interim CEO/Harbour Master, Capt Richard Eggleton.

Capt Geoff Holland is now in post as CEO/Harbour Master at Dart Harbour. He was appointed to the role at the end of 2020 after a thorough recruitment process. Competition for this prestigious role was tough with over 100 applicants applying for the job coming from a range of backgrounds, but Capt Holland stood out and demonstrated all the required skills to take on this rewarding and challenging role.

Capt Holland comes from a Ports and Merchant Navy background having previously held roles as Harbour Master at both Tilbury in Essex and Felixstowe in Suffolk. During his time as Harbour Master he helped oversee several major projects including the Felixstowe port expansion and significant flood defence works on the Thames.

Before coming ashore, Capt Holland held senior positions in two of the UK’s largest shipping companies, Stena Line Ferries and Saga Cruises. He also served with John Swire and Sons and P&O Princess Cruises as well as holding a voluntary board member role for a Trust Port in Essex.

Speaking about his new role, Capt Holland said:
“I have now relocated to Devon and I am looking forward to settling into the role of CEO/Harbour Master for Dart Harbour. Having been to many harbours around the world, the River Dart always stood out as one that I would like to one day be in charge of; I think the river and the surrounding countryside are beautiful and I’m very much looking forward to becoming part of the local community. I hope to meet up with the many users and groups that use Dart Harbour, and to carry on the good work that has been done over the last few years. I have really valued the handover and vital information that Rich has been able to brief me on before I started ‘for real’.”

Chairman of Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority Board, James Dodd commented:

“It seems a long time ago since we ran the competition for a new HM, and I am delighted that Geoff has both relocated to the area and taken up his new position, which two tasks were unfortunately hindered by the ongoing pandemic. The handshake between him and Rich has been long, but a very thorough one, so Geoff is well placed to lead his team through 2021 and on. With the expectation of some early relaxations in the National Covid response, we are hoping for a more traditional pattern of activity on the river this year, and I know that the whole Dart Harbour team will continue to provide the excellent quality of service that we have all come to admire.”

Capt Holland took up his role on the 1st February 2021, initially working remotely from Essex, he spent his first month learning the ropes from Capt Rich Eggleton MN as Interim CEO/HM, before relocating to Devon and starting in a full time capacity in the Harbour Office on 1st March. Capt Holland valued this transition period to allow him time to become familiar with the Harbour, Stakeholders and Operations.

Capt Eggleton commented that “I’m sure the whole community will join us in welcoming Capt Holland to the area and in getting settled in to his new role throughout 2021”.
