“What do I get for my harbour dues?” Answering your FAQs

“What do I get for my harbour dues?” is a frequently asked question so we’d like to highlight all the advantages and facilities that our customers benefit from after paying harbour dues.

  • Harbour dues are paid to the Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority and they fund our statutory duties on the river and support improvements and services across the harbour.

  • We ensure the river is safe for navigation – providing things like navigation marks, hydrographic surveys, tidal information, local notices and speed limits.

  • Allows access to the 13 miles of navigable river between Dartmouth and Totnes controlled by the Authority.

  • We have a river patrol out to help you every day – each year we assist thousands of boats, from help with mooring to towing after a breakdown.

  • You can moor your boat for up to 2 hours free of charge at our convenient visitor pontoons.

  • You can use our tender landings all over the river for up to 6 hours.

  • You can use our waste pontoon to dispose of marine rubbish and to top up fresh water.

  • You help contribute towards our environmental improvements of the river. This includes prevention and clean up of spills such as oil pollution.

  • You help fund projects such as the swim zone, which encourage a new generation of river users.

  • Promulgation of local notices.

  • Traffic monitoring during busy events.

  • Harbour dues are collected either daily, on a frequent basis or annually.

  • Harbour dues are payable on all boats that are 4m LOA and above in addition to the mooring fees listed below. Harbour dues are not transferable between boats. Vessels that have no mechanical means of propulsion are also exempt from harbour dues. Vessels, including jetskis and similar craft, of less than 4m with more than 40HP engines need to pay harbour dues.

  • Harbour dues charges for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 are as follows:

Although harbour dues are separate from mooring fees, they contribute to the shared services, infrastructure and safety functions that DHNA provides across the River Dart.
