Local MP Visits Maritime Partners to Discuss Future of Key Apprenticeship

Marine Plant Hire were pleased to welcome Caroline Voaden MP today to meet with representatives from Kraken Marine Services, South Devon College, and Dart Harbour & Navigation Authority to discuss the proposed retirement of the ST0400 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Apprenticeship.

The meeting highlighted the apprenticeship’s vital role in supporting the maritime sector by developing the next generation of skilled seafarers at a time when the industry faces an ageing workforce and increasing demand for qualified crew.

With the maritime industry providing significant employment and economic value across South Devon and the surrounding area, and with the local workboat fleet continuing to expand, attendees stressed the importance of maintaining a dedicated pathway into the profession.

The ST0400 Small Commercial Vessel Crewmember Apprenticeship has a proven track record of equipping apprentices with the skills, qualifications and experience needed to build successful maritime careers while helping employers meet current and future workforce requirements.

We thank Caroline Voaden MP for taking the time to hear directly from employers, apprentices, training providers and industry representatives about why retaining this apprenticeship is essential to the long-term sustainability and growth of the region’s maritime sector.
