LNTM 15/2019 Regatta Rowing

Effective until 02 September 2019

Introduction

Rowing events form one of the mainstays of the regatta period.  Rowing races will take place over 5 different days during the regatta period.  There are three different rowing organisations sponsoring rowing races, ‘Local Rowing’, West of England Amateur Rowing Association (WEARA) and pilot gig rowing.

Area

The majority of rowing races will take place downstream (from north to south) between the Higher and Lower Car Ferries (coloured green on the diagram).  Some of the races are ‘long course’ races and are started in the vicinity of Noss Marina, also finishing at the Lower Car Ferry (coloured blue).  The race areas are denoted in the diagram on the right of this text.

Method

The rowing organisations will each be responsible for the efficient and safe conduct of rowing races, by use of their own safety boats and liaison with Dart Harbour.  A start gun will be used to commence and finish races.  The numbers of boats competing in each race may vary from two to as many as six.  Motorised whalers from BRNC and safety boats displaying a yellow flag will conduct traffic management duties.

Safety

All mariners navigating in the river are to give race participants  as wide a berth as possible by navigating through the main anchorage and Kingswear trots, if safe and practicable, to the east of the race course, and to make minimum wash as vessels involved in racing pass.
